pretty sure that strange looking tree is a banana tree. what you took a picture of is the flower, then it will grow its fruit and then that stalk will die and another of its shoots will grow in its place. i think you can harvest the bananas from it in like 8 or 9 weeks if you run out of food. beautiful pictures in general. and i was very moved by the picture of the soldier. p'n'l
